GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF HEALTH THIS HOLIDAY SEASON: GET A FLU SHOT NOW
December 18, 2006

Charlotte, NC – January, February and March are traditionally the peak months for seasonal influenza and confirmed cases are beginning to be reported in counties across the state. In addition, the number of people reporting influenza-like illnesses is up sharply. That is why the Health Department strongly encourages those who have not yet been protected to get a flu shot now.

Getting a flu vaccination is easy. Just call the Mecklenburg County Health Department at 704-336-6500 to make an appointment. Cost for the vaccine is $25 and can be paid for by cash, check or charge. The Health Department also accepts Medicare "B" and Medicaid.

The best defense against the flu is a flu shot, but in the absence of a shot, there are precautions the public can take to protect themselves.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following to help prevent the spread of the flu and other infectious diseases:

  • Avoid close contact — Stay away from people who are sick When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick, too.
  • Stay home when you are sick — If possible, stay home from work or school and postpone errands until you are well. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
  • Cover your mouth and nose — When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or even your sleeve to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Clean your hands - Washing your hands often is one of the best ways to be protected from germs.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth when you are ill — Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

"We are asking people to follow these simple steps to avoid the spread of influenza and other infections here in Mecklenburg County," said Medical Director Dr. Stephen Keener.

Whether you come to the Health Department or get the vaccine from your personal physician, it's essential to protect yourself and those around you. For more information on how to keep healthy this flu season, visit www.meckhealth.org.
