The current distribution of potassium iodide (KI) makes the thyroid-protecting tablets available free to those who work or live within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone of either the Catawba or McGuire Nuclear Power Plants.

Below is information specific to each County about pick-up sites, available hours and special instructions for employers.

Those wanting to pick up KI are asked to first call the sites below to check on availability.

    Catawba County:

Employers within the 10-mile EPZ of the Catawba Nuclear Power Plant may pick up potassium iodide (KI) for their employees from 8:00am - 5:00pm M-F, at the Catwawba County Health Department at 3070 11th Avenue Drive SE, in Hickory, NC.

Work sites are responsible for storage of the KI and developing a distribution plan for employees.  Employers are eligible for one (1) tablet per person based on the number of employees on the property during the largest shift.

Those living within the 10-mile EPZ are still eligible for two (2) tablets per person living in their home and may pick up KI at the Catawba County Health Department.

    Gaston County:

Distribution of KI will take place at the Gaston County Health Department, 991 W. Hudson Blvd. in Gastonia, NC.  Business owners/employers are asked to contact the Environmental Health office regarding the number of employees by calling 704-853-5200. This will allow us to package the tablets ahead of time.

Employers who have called in advance, or for those living within the 10-mile EPZ may pick-up KI at the Gaston County Health Department office at 991 W. Hudson Blvd. in Gastonia, M-F from 8-5. This information is also available on our KI Hotline at 704-853-5205.

    Iredell County:

Employers within the 10-mile EPZ of the McGuire Nuclear Power Plant may arrange to pick-up potassium iodide for their employees. A request by mail or by fax (704-664-9737) on company letterhead must be sent to the Mooresville office of the Iredell County Health Department at least five working days prior to the expected pick up date. The request must contain the number of employees on site during the largest shift and the name(s) of company representative(s) who will have the authority to pick up the tablets. Worksites are eligible for one (1) tablet per person based on the number of employees on site during the largest shift.

The initial employer pick-up will be on Tuesday, December 17th between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. from the Mooresville office of the Iredell County Health Department. All subsequent pick-ups will occur only on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the Mooresville office.

Individuals living within the 10-mile EPZ of the McGuire Nuclear Power Plant may pick-up KI at the Mooresville office of the Iredell County Health Department at 610 East Center Avenue.  Pick-up is only available on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month between 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
