About the HIV Test:
Before testing, each person meets privately with a counselor to assess his or her risk of exposure to HIV and to decide if testing is needed based on this assessment. Each client, regardless of risk level, develops an action plan for reducing his or her chances of getting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Several forms are completed during this process, therefore, on average, the counseling process takes about 30 to 45 minutes (which does not include waiting time).
After counseling, the person is sent to the lab where a small sample of blood is drawn, labeled (using numbers) and sent to the State lab for processing. Tests results are usually available in about 12 weekdays. Before returning for test results, it is best to call (704) 336-6458 to make sure the results are back. Results are available on a walk-in basis. HIV test results are never given over the telephone!
