Are you going to be a first-time parent?
Smart Start is a program for pregnant women and their families in Mecklenburg County who are parenting for the first time. Our goal is to help you meet your needs as a new parent until your baby is two years old.

What is the program?
- While you are pregnant, a nurse or social worker will visit you at your home, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly depending on your needs. After the birth of your baby these visits with you will continue in order to assist you in meeting your parenting goals.

What will I learn?
- The nurse or social worker will provide you with information on having a healthy pregnancy, parenting and making healthy life choices. The nurse or social worker will answer your questions about infant care, your baby's development, good nutrition, parenting tips, and much, much, more.
What is the cost?
- The program is free for first-time parents who are residents of Mecklenburg County.
Client eligibility:
Any Mecklenburg County resident who is about to be a parent for the first time is eligible.
Services:
The Intensive Home Visiting Program provides:
- Intensive case management for first time parents, beginning when the woman are pregnant
- Referral services to improve pregnancy and parenting outcomes
- Services in the home
