Testing and Early Detection
|
Many sexually transmitted diseases have subtle symptoms or no symptoms at all and may go undetected without performing the screening tests. Early detection means a cure for most STDs and a decrease in the spread of infection to others. With early detection, the ability to treat a disease and accomplish a successful outcome is greatly increased.
The testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases is simple, free and confidential. It involves drawing a small tube of blood from a patient and performing a finger stick for the OraQuick (HIV) test. A visit to one of the Health Department sites for STD testing is private and discrete. For an appointment, please call 704.336.6500 Monday – Friday 8:00 – 4:00. Clients are counseled by highly trained staff on their specific personal risk factors. At the conclusion of the STD visit, the client will be given an I.D. number to bring back to the Health Department in approximately three weeks for test results. Clients may call to see if test results are back from the lab but will not be able to get test results over the phone. The number to call to see if syphilis or HIV test results are back is 704.336.6402. If a client is positive for an STD, he/she will be referred for proper treatment, counseling, prevention guidelines and case management services if needed. If negative for an STD, the client still receives counseling and prevention messages from the counselor.
