Are you going to be a first-time mom or dad?
Smart Start is a program for pregnant women and their families who are expecting their first child. Our goal is to help you meet your needs as a new parent until your baby is two years old.

What is the program?
- While you are pregnant, a nurse or child educator will visit you at home, your job, clinic or wherever you choose at least once a month or depending on need. After the birth of your baby these visits with you will continue in order to assist you in meeting your parenting goals.

What will I learn?
- The nurse or child educator can help you learn about things you can do to have a healthy pregnancy and give your baby a health start in life. The nurse or child educator will answer you questions about infant care, your baby's development, good nutrition, parenting tips, and much, much, more.
What is the cost?
- The program is free for first-time mothers who are residents of Mecklenburg County.
Client eligibility:
Any Mecklenburg County resident who is or is about to be a parent for the first time is eligible.
Services:
The Intensive Home Visiting Program provides:
- Intensive case management for first time pregnant women
- Referral services to improve pregnancy and parenting outcomes
- Services in the home and community settings
