The Office of the Medical Director provides medical consultation and support for the Mecklenburg County Health Department.

Mecklenburg County Medical Director Dr. Stephen Keener (right) holds degrees from Davidson, UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University. He has been with the Health Department for seventeen years.

The Medical Director is responsible for:

• Provision of direct hands-on medical care in Health Department Clinics
• Supervision of medical professionals in the Health Department
• Medical authority for all Health Department matters
• Representation of Health Department on community task forces, work groups, and boards
• Serves as team leader/epidemiologist for NC Public Health Regional Surveillance Team 7 (PHRST-7)
• Provision of medical advice and input on all Health Departmental policies and procedures
• Serves as liaison from the Health Department to hospitals, and medical, dental, mental health, veterinary, and pharmacy providers
• Serves as public spokesperson for the Health Department on medical issues affecting the public's health
• Represents the Health Department and Mecklenburg County government in state and national organizations
