This office provides fiscal service management, human resources, media relations, website and broadcasting management, the coordination of Health Department automation efforts, and the monitoring of the contract with Carolinas Healthcare System. Management of epidemic threats to the community associated with sexually transmitted diseases requires surveillance and abatement activities for HIV, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, AIDS, Hepatitis B, Chancroid, Lymphogranuloma Venereum and Granuloma Inguinale, etc. Whereas, major epidemic threats as well as endemic threats from an array of communicable diseases demand that the Director impose strong control measures. Rabies, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Tuberculosis, Meningitis, Food borne Diseases, Legionnaire's Disease, measles, and Pertussis remain as threats.
However, the rapid growth and diversity of Mecklenburg County will afford the opportunity for many new diseases to emerge and infiltrate the population. Prompt and efficient identification, response, isolation, tracking and controlling the spread of such diseases is paramount for community protection. Tracking birth and death incidents is important towards identifying trends in the county. The Vital Records office registers all birth and death certificates occurring in Mecklenburg County.
New and complex threats plaguing the Office of the Health Director include bioterrorism and threats of environmental sabotage. These threats are clearly public health concerns. In the event of occurrence, the Emergency Operations Center will rely on the Health Director as a key leader in mobilizing emergency operations.
