Man Dies in Early Morning Fire

CHARLOTTE, NC - A 58-year old man died early Monday morning (November 15, 2004) after a fire broke out in a second floor sleeping area of the New Beginning Church at 1525 Dilworth Avenue.  Charlotte Fire 911 was called at 6:12 am, and firefighters arrived on the scene at 6:17 am.  They found heavy smoke pouring out of the metal two-story building.  As firefighters advanced hose lines to extinguish the second-floor blaze, a quick search was initiated to ensure the 25 male residents who slept there were safely evacuated.  The occupants who escaped on their own advised firefighters that one person was still unaccounted for.  During the secondary search, a deceased male resident was located in a second floor bedroom area.

The Charlotte Fire Investigation Task Force responded to determine the origin and cause of this tragic fire.  Investigators traced the cause to a portable electrical space heater in use too close to the bed.  Charlotte fire investigators also identified concerns with fire code violations during the investigation.  This life safety issue is still being investigated by the Charlotte Fire Marshall's office.  Citizens with questions or concerns related to homeless shelters and their safe occupation can call the Charlotte Fire Department at 704-336-2441.  Please provide the street address and explain the concern.  We will take the necessary action.
