Brush Fire in South Charlotte Ruled Accidental

Charlotte, N.C.-The first of many calls to fire 911 were received at 12:59 this afternoon reporting a brush fire that had reached a nearby home on Marie Roget Way. Responding Charlotte Firefighters reported heavy smoke conditions visible from approximately a mile away. Over 75 firefighters along with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, Medic, and a representative from the NC Forestry Service worked on scene Wednesday afternoon. This brush fire resulted in significant damage to two (2) homes and minor damage to ten (10) other homes in this neighborhood just off of Rea Road in South Charlotte. One female was treated by Medic for non-life threatening injuries and the incident was marked under control in just under one hour.

The Charlotte Fire Investigation Task Force responded and ruled the cause of this fire to be accidental. Fire Investigators determined the cause was due to discarded smoking materials in shrubs outside a home on Marie Roget Way. The American Red Cross is on scene working to support the needs of those that will be displaced.
