Apartment Fire Sends 1 to Hospital, Puppy Doing Fine

Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Fire Department was called just after 12 noon Wednesday reporting a 2-story apartment on fire in the 500 block of Hawthorne Lane. When FF's arrived they found smoke conditions pouring out of a 2nd floor unit. The male occupant was able to escape his burning apartment, however, he was immediately treated by Charlotte Firefighters for possible smoke inhalation. Medic transported the male to an area hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. As members of the Charlotte Fire Dept worked quickly to extinguish the blaze, a secondary search of other units resulted in the rescue of "Duke" a 12-week old puppy. One crew of Firefighters gave treatment to the injured person, as another firefighter was able to give oxygen to "Duke" using the pet oxygen mask that was donated to various Charlotte fire companies over 2 years ago. The cause of the fire was ruled accidental due to carelessly discarded smoking material in the bedroom of the 2nd floor unit. Damage estimates were put at approximately $10K.
