First arriving Charlotte Firefighters begin their fire attack

Investigators from Charlotte's Fire Investigation Task Force have traced the cause of last night's second alarm fire at the Springfield Square Condominiums to an exterior light fixture. The fire originated within an open stairwell landing between the second and third floors of the building. Due to the stairwell being open and constructed of wooden framing and siding, the fire quickly spread to the third floor balconies and to the roof for the building. Heavy fire damage occurred to the two third floor condominiums while six other units were damaged primarily by heat and smoke. There were no reported injuries. Damage is estimated at $500,000.00
