Earliest stations

1891 - The Fire Department used space in the newly built City Hall, located at North Tryon and East Fifth Streets. Apparatus bays faced the Fifth Street side.

1901 - A second station was built on the corner of North Church and W Trade Streets. Soon after, it was demolished and another station was constructed on South Church between Trade and Fourth Streets.

1911 - The second station closed due to the advent of motorized fire apparatus. All equipment ran from the station located at Tryon and Fifth Streets.

1917 - All horse drawn apparatus was taken out of service and replaced with motorized equipment.

1925 - City Hall was moved to 600 E. Trade Street. Fire Station 1 was also moved to a new location behind City Hall at 125 S. Davidson Street. This station closed in 1990.
