Winter weather can bring cold, ice, snow, high winds and interruption of power to the Charlotte Mecklenburg area. With the approach of a winter weather system preparation is the key to your safety!
- Assemble a disaster supply kit; store a 3 day supply of drinking water, canned/no cook food, a manual can opener, first aid kit, battery powered radio, flashlight and extra batteries.
- Prepare for the possibility that you will need to stay in your home for several days, if you loose electrical power, use fireplaces, woodstoves and portable space heating equipment very carefully, always follow manufactures directions.

Maintain a minimum of at least three feet from all combustible materials, including drapes and furniture

Always turn space heating equipment off when you are not in the room.

Supervise children and pets when they are around space heating equipment.

Fuel- filled equipment should be filled outdoors and when completely cooled.

Maintain ventilation when using kerosene heaters to avoid the build-up of toxic fumes and carbon monoxide.

Test and replace batteries in your smoke, carbon monoxide alarms and flashlights.

Use flashlights or glow sticks if the power is out at your house Do not use candles or other open flame lamps indoors for lighting.

Dress in several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight warm clothing. Outer garments should be tightly woven and water-repellent. Mittens are warmer than gloves.

Keep cars and other vehicles fueled and in good repair. Winterize your car by checking the car battery and antifreeze.

If your car gets stuck during a storm remain in your vehicle; rescuers are most likely to find you there.

Do not bring or use gas or charcoal grills inside your home for heating or cooking purposes.

Portable generators should not be operated inside homes, attached garages or porches. Always follow manufacturers directions.

Keep cell phones charged up for emergency use.
Winter storms can happen quickly and sometimes without warning.
