The Fire Safety Smoke House is provided by the Charlotte Fire Department to give children within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System a general idea of what to expect during a fire and how to get out alive.
Firefighters give a fire safety classroom presentation which includes a video. The class then goes outside and tours the Fire Safety House. Firefighters teach the children about crawling low when there is a fire in their home and also tell them about the importance of smoke detectors. One group of children is placed upstairs and one group downstairs, then they swap. This gives the children a general idea of what to expect during a fire and how to get out alive.
