Cold Weather Safety Tips and Pipe Freezing Prevention

One of the most common safety concerns is placing space heaters too close to combustibles

  • Provide at least 3 feet of clearance in all directions from any combustibles such as drapes, furniture and magazines.
  • Never leave portable heating appliances unattended while in use.
  • Do not fill or re-fuel a kerosene heater inside a structure or while the heater is in use or hot.
  • Have fireplaces, woodstoves, chimneys and HVAC systems cleaned and inspected annually.
  • Confirm your smoke and carbon monoxide alarm are working properly by testing your battery. Be prepared in case of a power failure.
  • Do not leave running vehicles (which produce deadly carbon monoxide) unattended inside your garage or in close proximity to your home.

Pipe freezing Prevention

  • Allow faucets INSIDE the home that FACE an outside wall to maintain a slow drip.
  • Open doors and cabinets under sinks to allow air to circulate.
  • Drain the water from pipes if you are leaving for an extended period of time and have your home checked while you are gone.
  • Keep the doors open between a heated room and an unheated room to allow air to circulate and try NOT to allow your heat below 55 degrees.
