Tent and Canopy Permits


Purpose:

To establish a set of guidelines and procedures for the issuance of tent and canopy permits and the inspections required for their approval.

Policy:

  1. The Fire Inspector shall issue all tent and canopy permits at the time the tent inspection is conducted and compliance obtained.
  2. Tent and canopy permits will be required for the following:
    1. A tent having an area in excess of 200 square feet.
    2. A canopy having an area in excess of 400 square feet
  3. For two or more tents, 2 permits shall be issued. This shall be accomplished by receiving a payment for 2 permits and on the On Site Permit form, note "multiple tents".
  4. Upon request for permit and inspection, the inspector shall notify caller of the tent permit fee and request that the fee be available to him or her at the time of site inspection.
  5. At the time of inspection, the inspector shall survey the tent and/or canopy to ensure that all applicable sections of chapter 24 of the North Carolina Fire Code are complied with.
  6. Upon approval, the inspector shall complete the "On Site Permit" and provide the applicant with his or her copy.
  7. For tents used for assembly purposes with an occupant load of 300 or more persons, fire watch personnel consisting of a minimum of two CFD employed fire inspectors shall be required. The Off-Duty Work Coordinator shall be notified of the need for fire watch as soon as practical so that scheduling arrangements can be made.
