Permit Types and Inspection/User Fee Schedule

The Charlotte Fire Department issues permits for the storage, handling and use of hazardous materials, hazardous processes such as flammable/combustible spray finishing and repair garages, and special type operations such as carnivals and fairs, use of tents and canopies, use of explosives, etc. The sole purpose of issuing Fire Department permits is to ensure compliance with the applicable provisions of the North Carolina Fire Code as they relate to each different type permit or process. Note: For permits related to blasting operations, indoor/outdoor fireworks displays, tents/canopies, carnivals and fairs, trade show and exhibits, and ABC inspection fees, see the "Special Permits" link for additional information and requirements.

There are user fees that apply to each permit, with some of the permits requiring annual renewals and subsequent renewal fees, with others requiring a one-time issue such as blasting operations, fireworks displays, etc. Most permits require the completion of the Hazardous Material Inventory Statement (HMIS), and completing this document requires DOT numbers for specific chemicals stored on the property. You may refer to your Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the DOT number, or you may click on the following link for access to the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook to acess DOT numbers for most common chemicals: http://hazmat.dot.gov/pubs/erg/gydebook.htm.

In addition to the user fees, there are plan review fees, fees for the performance testing of fire protection and life-safety systems, and inspection fees for specialized inspections (ABC inspections). See the user fee schedule Permit User Fee Schedule, FY 10', Effective July 01, 2009 (87k) for permit, plans review, testing, and inspection fees. You may also download a complete permit application package for Fire Department permits here: Permit Application.pdf (590k). For further information on the performance testing fees, click on the "Certificate of Occupancy Inspection Process" link to the left side of this page.
