Availability of Material Safety Data Sheets


Purpose:

During any fire or chemical incident at commercial occupancies, the immediate access to Material Safety Data Sheets for any hazardous materials involved or located on the property can be a vital tool in the mitigation of such an incident. This policy is established in order to ensure that everyone has a clear understanding of the requirement for maintaining such records on the property.

Policy:

  1. In accordance with Section 407.2 of the North Carolina Fire Code, "Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all hazardous materials shall be readily available on the premises"

  1. All the MSDS shall be maintained in one constant location on the premises and shall be updated on a regular basis as the need arises.

  1. MSDS that are accessed only by the use of a computer do not meet the requirement of being "readily available on the premises". The MSDS shall be physically located on the property and available for immediate use.
