Fire Code Violations Notices are issued by Fire Inspectors, Battalion Chiefs, and Fire Captains in accordance with Chapter 8 of the Code of the City of Charlotte.
The person to whom a Violation Notice is issued is responsible for paying the fine. He or she has fifteen (15) days from the date the Violation Notice was issued to pay it. If the fine has not been paid by the end of that period, the Fire Prevention Bureau will, within the next five (5) days, take out a summons. At that point, the person has the option of paying the fine, plus penalty, or going to court to present his or her case. If he or she takes the latter option, the court will decide the case based on the information presented by the person and the Fire Prevention Bureau.
