USAR: Urban Search and Rescue

USAR-1 is a 2001 Hackney Rescue Unit. This unit carries all the necessary equipment for structural collapse, confined space rescue and trench rescue. The unit is housed at Fire Station #11 and is the primary unit for the North Carolina USAR Task Force-3. The Task Force is comprised of a Haz-Mat component, a Swift Water Rescue component, an Incident Support Team and the USAR component.

We are grateful to be able to share these images of Charlotte Firefighters responding to the call for help in the North Carolina Mountains. The EOC Staff tracks 23 Teams from across the state being sent to help local units. The NCEM Western Branch was the coordination point for all resources on both Hurricane Frances and Ivan. A total of 8 CFD personnel staffed the EOC operations section for the two deployments. Deputy Chief Jeff Dulin was the USAR/SRT Group Leadrer for Operations in both deployments.

The coordination of the response to Hurricanes Frances and Ivan ftook place with the collaborative effort of State Emergency Management Western Branch Office, CFD, NC National Guard, NC Office of Emergency Medical Service and NC Forestry Service in the Emergency Operations Center.

Public information became a major issue with both deployments. CFD PIO Capt. Rob Brisley served as the NCEM Western Branch Information Officer for both deployments. Rob worked with Incident Commander Tim Miller and the Governors Office on news briefings and information releases.
