In 1988, Charlotte and Mecklenburg County implemented E-9-1-1.  This system allowed the caller's address and phone number to be displayed on a screen at everyone's console.  The information on the screen is called the ANI (automatic number identifier) and the ALI (automatic location identifier).  When you call 9-1-1, the phone number and address that you are calling from is displayed on the screen.  During an emergency, you may have to go to a neighbor's house to call 9-1-1.  Remember to give the telecommunicator the address of the emergency, not where you are calling from.  Telecommunicators will ask you where help is needed and they will have you repeat the information back to them to make sure they have the right information.
