Deputy Fire Chief Rob Kinniburgh

Deputy Chief Rob Kinniburgh joined the Charlotte Fire Department in 1982 and is one of the original members of the city's hazardous materials team, assigned to Fire Station 13. Chief Kinniburgh was promoted to Captain in 1987 and served as a Training Captain form 1988 to 1994 before returning to Operations at Station 4. Promoted to Battalion Chief in 1997, Rob served as Chief of 4th Battalion for 7 years, and as Chief of Training from 2005 to 2007.  Chief Kinniburgh was promoted Deputy Chief in 2008.

Chief Kinniburgh served as the Department's initial accreditation manager, successfully leading the department to attain Accredited Agency status in 2005. He continues to participate as a CPSE/CFAI Accreditation Peer Assessor. Rob has also been heavily involved in other departmental activities such as the Business Process Reengineering project and the CAD/RMS Information Technology Upgrade initiative.

 

Chief Kinniburgh has an Associate's degree in Fire Protection Technology from CPCC and BS in Fire Safety Engineering Technology from UNC Charlotte. Chief Kinniburgh has received professional recognition as a Chief Fire Officer Designee by the Center for Public Safety Excellence. Rob is currently pursuing a Masters in Public Administration / Emergency Management at UNC Pembroke.

Chief Kinniburgh is a graduate of the NC Association of Fire Chief's 'Executive Development' program and the City of Charlotte's 'Dimensions in Leadership' program.

  • Deputy Chief Kinniburgh currently serves as the City's Fire Marshal, responsible for the Fire Prevention Bureau's Code Enforcement and Plans Review efforts, as well as Fire Investigation and Fire / Life Safety Education efforts. In addition, Chief Kinniburgh oversees the Department's Information Technology division, Accreditation/NFPA 1710 compliance effort; serves as liaison between the fire department and Char-Meck Utilities, CATS, and County Fire. Chief Kinniburgh handles requests for Special Event coverage and assessment center assessor requests. Chief Kinniburgh represents the department on the City's Neighborhood Cabinet and Problem Solving initiative, City Council's Community Safety Committee and Economic Development / Planning Committee.
