In response to the need for effective safe driving for all City departments, the City of Charlotte has constructed a state of the art driver training facility. The facility, managed by Risk Management, is located on 16 acres in southeast Charlotte and provides several training areas that can be used simultaneously. These areas include an urban area that is used for simulation driving maneuvers on typical secondary city streets. The second urban area is designed to simulate residential streets, including a cul-de-sac. The third major training area is the 100' x 250' skid pad. The skid pad is designed to teach skid control on wet surfaces. Other basic emergency reaction driving exercises include evasive action drills, precision exercises, and off road recovery. Most users will also have specialized training pursuant to their department's mandated training requirements.
