If an emergency exceeds the boundary of Mecklenburg County, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office works in cooperation with other county emergency offices, the state emergency offices (of both North and South Carolina) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Examples of this cooperation include Hurricanes, Tornados, and Duke Power exercises.

Depending on the impact of the emergency, FEMA may become the lead agency in charge of the situation.
