The Charlotte Emergency Management works closely with the area Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross. Wheather  a natural disaster such as the aftermath of a hurricane, tornado or flood, or a human caused disaster through acts of terrorism or the violent acts of an individual, the local Red Cross coordinates local volunteers to help with emergencies locally and nationally.
