Natural Disasters: Snow & Ice

Although Charlotte-Mecklenburg is located in the southern piedmont of North Carolina, we still receive both snow and ice storms during the winter months. Because such events do not happen frequently, we sometimes fail to take the necessary precautions.

The City of Charlotte has a Snow and Ice removal plan that is put into action is an ice or snow storm is predicted.  Major thoroughfares and highways will be cleared first. City crews usually spread salt and/or slag on the roads.

If a large enough accumulation of snow has fallen, then streets will be scrapped. Residential streets are not cleared by City crews.  In the event of major storm listen to your local radio or television.  You will be advised of closings and/or late openings.
