The hospitality and tourism industry is an important driver of Charlotte's economy, annually contributing over $2.5 billion dollars and 38,640 jobs to the local economy. The Queen City is home to three professional sports teams, a vibrant arts and science community, a variety of fine-dining experiences and award-winning hotels. From major conventions and sporting events to neighborhood parades and festivals, Charlotte is proud to host hundreds of events each year.
The City of Charlotte's Economic Development Office works closely with local hospitality and tourism partners to create a prospering tourism industry, and maintain Charlotte's identity as a leading destination for business and leisure travel in the U.S.

Recent news:
- Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority:
The City of Charlotte played an important role in merging the Auditorium-Coliseum-Convention Center Authority and Visit Charlotte (the Convention & Visitors Bureau) into a new organization called the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA). The CRVA began operating on July 1, 2004 and will improve the marketing of Charlotte as a destination, as well as streamline decision-making on tourism related issues.
- Mayor's Task Force on Cultural Facilities:
Mayor Pat McCrory recently appointed a Task Force to evaluate a vision and implementation plan for future cultural facilities. The projects under consideration include the Afro-American Cultural Center renovation and expansion, the Bechtler Art Museum, Discovery Place renovation, the Mint Museum relocation, a N.C. Dance Theatre Facility, and a 1,200-seat Uptown Theatre.
- Uptown Arena:
The City invested $200 million in a new downtown arena that will house the NBA Charlotte Bobcats and the WNBA Charlotte Sting. Construction is on schedule, within budget and should be completed November 2005.
- Johnson and Wales University:
Johnson and Wales University opened the doors to its new home in Uptown Charlotte September 2004. The $82 million state-of-the-art campus enrolls over 1,000 students and brings new life to West Trade Street.
- CIAA Tournament:
Charlotte has been selected to host the CIAA 2006-2008 Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament at the new Uptown Arena.
- Whitewater Park:
City partnered with region to bring U.S. National Whitewater Center to Charlotte along the Catawba River. The facility is designed for public use and will serve as an Official Olympic Training Site.
