Big Boxes
Big Boxes are vacant large retail buildings.  The City has been concerned about the negative impacts of vacant big boxes on the commercial and residential neighborhoods that surround them.  In an effort to understand the dynamics that cause these vacancies and to minimize their negative impacts, the City undertook a Big Box Study.  This study can be found by clicking on it on the right.
 
To monitor the extent of the vacancies in the community and to make the opportunities these vacancies present for reuse more readily accessible, the City also annually updates a list of vacant big boxes. This list is available at the right. 
 
Big boxes are often successfully reused for other retail tenants, schools, public facilities, and manufacturing.  Successful reuse projects in Charlotte are shown below.
