Transportation Questions
Answers:
  1. What kinds of transportation services are provided?

    The Program offers transportation:

    • to child daycare
    • to congregate settings such as: sheltered workshops, adult day care centers, and nutrition sites
    • for the elderly disabled
    • for elderly general purpose
    • for homebound meal delivery
    • to medical appointments
  2. Who is eligible to receive service?

Eligibility depends upon the type of service that you need.

    • Congregate Transportation: If you want transportation to a sheltered workshop or an adult day care center, the workshop or center will determine your eligibility. Currently we contract with the Nevin Center, Goodwill Industries, St. Marks Center, Vocational Rehabilitation, Selwyn Life Center, and Plaza Adult Living Adult Day Care Center. Notify your representative at the agency that you need transportation.  The Transportation office will receive a request for service from the agency and determine if you can be transported.  Their determination is based upon the availability of seats and vehicles in your geographical location.  If you want transportation to a nutrition site, you must be at least 60 years of age and in an area which is served by our existing routes.
    • Homebound meal delivery: The Senior Citizens Nutrition Program (SCNP) will determine your eligibility for homebound meal delivery. Call the SCNP at 704-336-4812 to request this service. Receipt of this service depend upon whether or not there is a route in your service area.
    • Medical transportation: If you need transportation to a medical destination and you receive Medicaid, contact your Medicaid caseworker to apply for transportation.  You worker will complete a service application on your behalf.
  3. How does an individual get a contract with the County to provide medical transportation? Companies interested in competing for a contract in the next fiscal year should submit a letter of interest to:  Transportation Program Manager, Department of Social Services, Services For Adults, 2940 Interstate St, Charlotte, NC 28208.

  4. What are the requirements to get a contract?

The primary requirement is that you have an established company that is willing and able to provide quality service to our customers. We take into account the number of vehicles and drivers you have and your demonstrated performance with other contracts -including contracts with other county agencies. There are some specific requirements (such as insurance, workers compensation, etc.) which will be explained in the bid package.

  5. Can a driver leave a meal for a homebound individual in a cooler outside the home if the individual is away from home or is unable to answer the door?

Service standards for the Homebound Meal program will not allow drivers to leave a meal. Drivers cannot give the meal to a neighbor or other individual to give to the customer when the customer returns home. The meal must be given directly to the homebound customer. By standard, the meal is supposed to be consumed within three (3) hours of preparation.
