Caregiver Support Questions

Answers:

  1. Does the Caregiver need to live in the same home as the Care Recipient in order to receive services? No, the caregiver can live anywhere and still receive assistance. It is the Care Recipient who must live in Mecklenburg County.

  2. Is there a cost for these services? No. However, families may be asked to share in the cost of the service through voluntary contributions, which will be used to provide additional Caregiver Support Services.

  3. What is Respite? Respite is a service that provides care and supervision for the care recipient so that the caregiver can take a break. It can be provided in the home, at an Adult Day Care/Day Health Center or in an assisted living facility or a nursing home.

  4. How long can respite services be provided? Respite services are provided on a short-term basis. The exact length of time is determined by the reason that care is needed, the type of respite that is needed, and the caregiver's individual needs.

  5. Will the program pay a family member to provide care in the home? At this time, services are only provided through licensed home care providers which have contracts with the Department of Social Services.

  6. What information will I need to give? Detailed information is gathered about the caregiver, in order to determine all of the needs and possible sources of help. This may include social security numbers and brief financial information. Enough information about the care recipient to insure a safe plan will also be gathered.
