An Adult Care Home is defined as "an assisted living residence in which the housing management provides 24-hour scheduled and unscheduled personal care services to two or more residents, either directly or, for scheduled needs, through formal written agreement with licensed home care or hospice agencies.
Some licensed adult care homes provide supervision to persons with cognitive impairments whose decisions, if made independently, may jeopardize the safety or well-being of themselves or others and therefore require supervision. Medication in an adult care home may be administered by designated, trained staff.
Legislation effective January 2002 requires a Certificate of Need (CON) for an adult care home for seven or more residents. If you are interested in a facility of this size, please go to the CON section of the Division of Facility Services website or call them directly at 919-855-3765 regarding this requirement. You can also request the Rules For the Licensing of Adult Care Homes or the Adult Care Home Procedures Manual via their website.
Family Care Homes: Adult care homes that provide care to two to six unrelated residents are commonly called family care homes. There are several steps involved in the pursuit of a family care home license.
Each home must have an licensed administrator. The Administrator's Testing Schedule is available on the Division of Facilities Services website.
