Medicaid and Managed Care

Medicaid for Pregnant Women (MPW) coverage is limited to services or treatment for conditions that affect the pregnancy. Medical verification of pregnancy is required. If a pregnant woman is covered by Medicaid, her newborn child is automatically eligible for Medicaid up to age 1.

Baby Love, Medicaid's maternity and child services program, provides formal case management services to eligible women during and after pregnancy and intervention as early in pregnancy as possible to promote healthy pregnancy and positive birth outcomes. More information about Baby Love

The WIC Program is a special supplemental nutrition program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). The program serves to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, & children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care. The Be Smart program offers free family planning health services to moderate- and low-income men and women in North Carolina who are:
- women ages 19 through 55
- men ages 19 through 60
North Carolina residents who are eligible for these services receive:
- annual family planning exams
- most types of birth control
- testing for pregnancy
- testing for sexually transmitted infections
- assistance in planning when to have a baby
- voluntary sterilization
