Crisis Intervention Program

DSS Vision:  To Be The Best

The Crisis Intervention Program (CIP), a federally funded program, provides financial assistance to households in a heating or cooling-related emergency.  CIP is a unique program in that it can expand in scope as the fiscal year progresses because the governing legislation gives the President the authority to make emergency releases of funds for unusually hot summers or unusually cold winters.  North Carolina, and in turn Mecklenburg County, has been the recipient of several emergency funding releases over the past few years.  Applications for CIP funds are made through Crisis Assistance Ministry (CAM), a DSS contract agency.

The General Assistance Program, funded by the County, provides CAM with funds to assist families with rent, utilities and other crisis situations.  CAM also administers Emergency Assistance funds to provide assistance to families in emergencies primarily in the areas of housing and utilities.  Other types of crisis intervention funds may be accessed through our Community Resources Office.
