Justice and Public Safety Task Force Overview
On May 20, 2008 the Board voted unanimously to create the 14-member, non-partisan rapid review task force (Mecklenburg County Justice and Public Safety Task Force) to identify and recommend to the Board by September immediate and substantive changes to the operations of city, county and state criminal justice agencies in Mecklenburg County to enhance their functional effectiveness. This Task Force was created in response to a combination of factors – including the 2008 jail needs assessment report (Kimme Master Plan) and public outcry for local government to do something to correct system deficiencies and an increase in crime – particularly, property crime. The Task Force was given the directive to recommend allocation of resources to make the most effective impact on crime and justice, taking into account new criminal justice budget provisions made by Mecklenburg County and Charlotte City Council, as well as legislative needs at the state level.
With a charge of working together to determine how to best allocate resources to make the most impact on crime and the criminal justice system, the Justice and Public Safety Task Force has spent the past three months receiving presentations, asking questions, reading reports and becoming familiar with the Mecklenburg County criminal justice system. Based on information gleaned during their three-month period of research, the Task Force created and prioritized their sixteen recommendations. These recommendations were presented to the BOCC for review and action on November 05, 2008.
