John McGillicuddy is General Manager (equivalent to Assistant County Manager) for Mecklenburg County government, the largest and most urban county in North Carolina. In this role, John's primary accountability is achieving the organization's scorecard goals for an efficient and effective government.

This includes providing executive oversight of strategic planning and performance evaluation, financial planning and management, customer service and satisfaction, information technology and e-government, human capital management, public information and communications, change management, organizational development, and diversity management.

John has been with Mecklenburg County since 1991, joining the Public Service & Information Department (PS&I) as a public information specialist. He was promoted to PS&I Director in 1994. In October 2000 he was named Interim Assistant County Manager. He then served as Executive Assistant to the County Manager from December 2000 to November 2002. He was appointed to his current position as General Manager in November 2002.
John has more than 25 years experience in strategic communications and planning. He also is a writer and editor, having published more than 50 magazine and newspaper articles on business, sports, healthcare, and public service. John also created and wrote "The Mecklenburgers," a 30-minute TV series on Mecklenburg County government that aired for four seasons (35 episodes) in Charlotte, NC. "The Mecklenburgers" earned 18 Telly Awards and four regional Emmy Award nominations.
John is a native of Massachusetts and earned a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He also holds a Master's degree in Organizational Change and Leadership (MSL) from Pfeiffer University. He is a Fellow of the American Leadership Forum in Charlotte (Class V) and a graduate of Leadership Charlotte (Class XX). John has lived in Charlotte since 1980, and is married with two children.
