As a General Manager, Bobbie Shields is responsible for leading the County's Growth Management and Environment Focus Area Leadership Team. He oversees Land Use and Environmental Services, Park and Recreation, and Real Estate Services.

Shields was hired as Deputy Director of the County Engineering Department in 1986 and was appointed County Engineer in 1989.  In 1994, he became Director of the consolidated Engineering and Building Standards Department.  He was named Assistant County Manager in December 2000 and General Manager in October 2002.  Previously, his responsibilities included executive oversight for the Sheriff Department, Court Services, and Medical Examiner.

Shields earned a BS degree in civil engineering from NC State University, a master of engineering degree from the University of SC and a MBA from UNC-Charlotte.  In addition to being a registered professional engineer in North and South Carolina, he is a State certified Building and Electrical Inspector.

Shields is a member of ICMA, NSPE, ULI, the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, and several other professional associations.
