Interim YFS Director Named
Paul Risk, deputy director for the Youth and Family Services division (YFS) of the Department of Social Services, has been named interim director of YFS. He will serve in this capacity until the YFS director vacancy is filled.
Paul has a Masters Degree in Social Work and has been with the County for more than 13 years as senior social services manager and as deputy YFS director. Prior to his service with the County, Paul was CEO of the Family Center in Charlotte.
Paul succeeds Dannette Smith, who resigned August 31, 2007 to take a leadership position with Fulton County, Georgia.
Manager’s Office Staff Changes
Deborah Goldberg has been promoted to a vacant position of Assistant to the County Manager. Deborah has been serving as a management analyst with the Office of Strategic Organizational Improvement (SOI) in the County Manager’s Office.
Deborah’s primary responsibilities will be legislative affairs and professional-level assistance and research for the Board. She will monitor federal and state legislative activities and work in conjunction with our lobbyists to pursue the interest of the County and keep the Board and management informed of important legislative issues.
Please note that in this new role, Deborah will serve as the primary staff contact point for the Board for those issues previously addressed to Clerk to the Board Janice Paige. Deborah will coordinate the receipt of and response to these requests. Deborah can be reached at (704) 336-2611, or

Updates on Key Initiatives
Among the components of the Board’s FY08-FY10 are several key initiatives in pursuit of the Board’s strategic emphasis during these three fiscal years. Over the next several weeks, we will provide updates to the Board on these key initiatives using the Board Bulletin, Board workshops, and the upcoming Board planning conference in October.
The updates will communicate the status of these initiatives, including milestones achieved and/or key decision points for the Board. The first update will be provided in next week’s Board Bulletin, beginning with key initiatives in the Effective and Efficient Government Focus Area.
