High School Challenge Request

As part of adopting the FY07 budget, the Board placed $4.9 million in restricted contingency for year three of the CMS High School Challenge. On Tuesday, September 26, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education will consider Superintendent Gorman’s plan for using these funds. Members of the Board of County Commissioners and the County Manager are invited to attend the Board of Education meeting to hear Superintendent Gorman’s presentation and the Board of Education’s discussion. Once the Board of Education approves an intended use for these funds, this item will be placed on the Board of County Commissioners’ agenda. The agenda item will request that the Board appropriate these funds from restricted contingency to CMS. This could occur as soon as the Board’s October 3 meeting.

We will let the Board know when this item will appear on its agenda and distributed any advance materials provided to us by CMS regarding this matter.

NCACC Legislative Agenda

As mentioned during the Board’s dinner meeting on September 19, the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) is seeking legislative requests for the next session of the North Carolina General Assembly. These requests will be considered by the NCACC for inclusion in its legislative agenda. Board members are asked to provide their legislative submissions to Deputy County Attorney Sandra Bisanar by September 27. The NCACC has requested these submissions by September 29.

We will compile these submissions and provide them to the NCACC as a tentative list. We will follow this by asking the Board to take formal action to identify its legislative priorities. These priorities will be forwarded to the NCACC as the Board’s formal legislative agenda.
