Health Department Accreditation
The Mecklenburg County Health Department accreditation team has submitted the required Health Department Self-Assessment Tool to the North Carolina Institute for Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill on Thursday April 13, meeting the deadline.
The work towards accreditation has continued since that date, including the accreditation team gathering documentation and materials in preparation for the official site visit by a multi-disciplinary team of public health professionals. The accreditation site visit will take place over three days from May 24 to 26. During this visit, the site visit team will have scheduled meetings with the Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners, General Manager Janice Allen Jackson, Health Department staff, community leaders, and other external partners. The site visit team also will tour five Health Department buildings as well as review the 41 benchmarks to reach accreditation. At the end of its visit on May 26, the site visit team will hold an exit conference, but will not comment on accreditation status for the Health Department at that time.
The Health Department is cautiously optimistic that it will be accredited. We will receive the decision of the North Carolina Public Health Accreditation Board in June. Once we learn of their decision, we will communicate it to the Board. Accreditation is important to local health departments because it sets a minimum standard for how a health department should operate in North Carolina, assuring the health of the community is protected.
FY2007 Board Calendar for Adopting the Budget
Below is a final schedule for the Board's budget workshops. At the first workshop, the Board will be asked to identify program categories and/or services for which there are questions. The May 24 workshop will be focused on public education. Both Central Piedmont Community College and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are scheduled to provide briefings to the Board on their budget requests.
The Board is scheduled to begin its straw voting on May 31 to conclude on June 1. The Board is slated to adopt the budget on June 6 at its regular meeting.
You may notice that this schedule does not include meeting on May 25 or 30 as discussed on Tuesday. Having reviewed the schedule, we believe the workshops on May 23, 24, 30 and June 1 will be sufficient time for the Board to finalize a budget. However, if more time is needed, we will adjust the schedule accordingly.
As you review the FY2007 Recommended Budget, please provide any questions you may have to Hyong Yi, Management and Budget Director, who will compile the questions as well as provide responses to those questions at the workshops or via email to the Board members.
