Committee of 21 Begins Work

The Committee of 21 held its first meeting on Wednesday, May 28. Board members will recall that the Committee was formed by the County, City, and Charlotte Chamber to build consensus on long-term solutions and funding options for road needs in Mecklenburg County. The Committee is chaired by Ned Curran, with Virginia Keogh and Pat Mumford serving as vice chairs. A full list of members is available by clicking on the recent news link at the Chamber's website.

The Committee's first meeting focused on setting goals and agreeing on the Committee's working process. The group will meet on a regular basis at the Government Center throughout 2008, and is expected to complete its work by the end of the year in advance of the General Assembly's 2009 Long Session. A website will be available soon, so the public can access information about the Committee's work. For additional information, please contact Deborah Long Goldberg at 704-336-2611 or email.

E-Verify Use to Begin June 18

Consistent with Board action, the County Human Resources Department has completed the registration process for using E-verify. HR staff who will use E-Verify will be completing the required online tutorial over the next few weeks. We are planning to begin using the new system with the June 18 new employee orientation. For additional information, please contact HR Director Chris Peek at 704-336-3138 or email.

Wade Promoted to Deputy County Attorney

I am pleased to announce the promotion of Tyrone Wade to Deputy County Attorney, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Sandra Bisanar.

Tyrone currently serves as managing attorney for the Youth and Family Services division (YFS) of the Department of Social Services. Tyrone has been with Mecklenburg County for 15 years working in YFS. Prior to joining our organization, he served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office for three years. Tyrone received a B.A. in liberal arts from Queens College in Flushing, NY and his Jurist Doctorate from Touro College in Huntington, NY.

Tyrone will start in his new position on June 4 and will be located on the 11th floor in the County Manager's Office. Over the next month, he will continue to work on YFS legal matters as needed. Sandra Bisanar has agreed to stay on through the end of June to assist in this transition.

We will introduce Tyrone to Board members during the dinner portion of the Board's next regular meeting.

- Harry L. Jones, Sr., County Manager
