2008-2009 Ryan White Award Announced
On March 4, the Mecklenburg County Health Department received news that the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the US Department of Health and Human Services awarded our Transitional Grant Area (TGA) with 2008-09 federal grant funding of $4.3 million. This is approximately $500,000 more than we received in 2007 ($3.8 million), and $642,978 more than requested in our proposal.
Our TGA includes the counties of Mecklenburg, Gaston, Cabarrus, Anson, Union and York, South Carolina. Through a competitive selection process, 24 proposals from all counties in our TGA have been awarded funding for the upcoming fiscal year. The names of the funded agencies can be found in the
Ryan White section of the
Mecklenburg Health Department website. The local grant management team for the Ryan White grant, which comprises Health Department staff, has begun negotiating contracts with those providers.
To date, Ryan White grant funds have been used to provide services to approximately 3,000 residents in our TGA. These services include but are not limited to:
-
medical services
-
physician visits
-
laboratory work
-
medications
-
mental health counseling
-
case management
-
medical transportation
With training from the grant management team, the service providers are learning more about the Ryan White program and how to supplement their current services with these new funds. The grant management team also has begun conducting audits to insure that funds are used cost-efficiently.
