Recycling Collection for Disabled Citizens
Staff Resource:
Victoria Garland, Solid Waste Services, 704-336-3410,
vgarland@ci.charlotte.nc.us

Currently the City of Charlotte offers backyard garbage collection for residents who are physically unable to take their garbage carts to the curb. In April 2008, Solid Waste Services initiated a pilot program in the North collection zone that offered recycling collection to residents who are physically unable to bring their recycling bins to the curb. The pilot was a success and on Monday, March 2, 2009 Solid Waste Services will begin offering this program citywide.

Residents currently receiving disability garbage service will have an opportunity to opt-in to disability recycling service. A letter detailing the new service option will be mailed to current disability garbage customers on Friday, February 6. They will have two weeks to respond with their intent to participate and to request a recycling bin if they don't already have one. Customers who wish to apply for disability recycling service, but who are not currently receiving disability garbage service, can apply by calling CharMeck 311 to request disability verification. Solid Waste Services staff will use its current disability verification procedures to determine eligibility.
