Center City 2020 Vision Plan Community Workshop 10/21/09
Resource:
       Dan Thilo, Planning, 704-336-8321,
dthilo@ci.charlotte.nc.us

The consultant for the Center City 2020 Vision Plan, MIG, will facilitate three community workshops, the first of which is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, 2009, 5:30 p.m. at the Charlotte Convention Center. Two additional workshops will be held in spring and summer 2010. In addition to the workshops, the 2020 Vision Plan community engagement process will encourage residents to visit www.centercity2020.com and to utilize social media and other communication tools to share their perspectives on issues related to urban design and ecology, land use and neighborhood development, and transportation and mobility. Residents also will be asked to help formulate ideas for how Charlotte's Center City can become a more memorable place of distinct neighborhoods connected by unique infrastructure.

The 2020 Vision Plan is a collaboration of Charlotte Center City Partners, the City of Charlotte, and Mecklenburg County that will guide the growth and development of Charlotte-Mecklenburg's urban core over the next decade. The plan study area will include Uptown, South End and other close-in neighborhoods adjacent to the I-277 loop. The project team has engaged nationally-recognized urban planning and design experts MIG, based in Berkeley, CA, who will lead the team that also includes three Charlotte firms: urban designers Cole Jenest and Stone, marketing communications firm Wray Ward, and transportation consultant Kimley-Horn & Associates.

The consultants will periodically provide updates to both the Charlotte City Council and Board of County Commissioners. This 14-month planning process will culminate in fall 2010 when the two elected bodies will be asked to consider adoption of the final plan.
