Charlotte Achieves Advanced-Level Recognition in North Carolina League of Municipalities' Green Challenge

The City of Charlotte recently received notification from the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) that it has achieved advanced-level recognition in the NCLM's Green Challenge program. The City will be recognized at NCLM's annual business meeting on October 27 in Greenville.

The Green Challenge is a program designed to recognize North Carolina municipalities who seek to protect the environment and operate government in a more cost effective, energy efficient, and environmentally friendly manner. Council approved a resolution pledging to participate in the challenge and to work towards saving energy and other natural resources on July 28, 2008. Charlotte received Level One recognition at the 2008 NCLM conference.

Staff submitted an application for advance-level recognition which described a number of City initiatives as proof of the City's commitment to protecting the environment. These initiatives include: the new LEED-centric Sustainable Facilities Policy; Centers, Corridors, and Wedges Growth Framework; CURB IT community-wide recycling program; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities' LEED certified Environmental Services Facility; CMGC ENERGY-STAR designation; "Pledge to Improve the Environment" community education effort; CATS SMARTride employee transit incentive; and others. Each initiative for which the City was awarded Green Challenge points is undertaken in order to achieve a specific focus area target.

In addition to recognition at the upcoming conference, the City will receive a plaque commemorating our efforts.
