The August 1, 2009, Derita-Statesville Road Community newsletter noted several code enforcement issues. The following information provides an update on the issues mentioned in the newsletter and other Code Enforcement activities in the area.
On July 20, 2009, Code Enforcement received service requests pertaining to cars parked on the lawn and trash/junk accumulation at 6204 Statesville Road and 3309, 3317 and 3413 Keith Drive. Each property was inspected on July 21, 2009. There were no violations identified at 6204 Statesville Road or 3413 Keith Drive.
Notices of violation requiring trash and junk clean-up were issued at 3309 and 3317 Keith Drive. The violation at 3309 Keith Drive has been corrected and the dilapidated furniture at 3317 Keith Drive was scheduled for bulky trash collection and placed at the curbside. There was no parking on the lawn violations observed at the time of inspection. The newsletter also referenced the accumulation of junk and trash at 2645 Allen Road. Based on staff's research, this is not a valid address. However, staff has addressed an issue of high weeds and grass at 2644 Allen Road, which was corrected on May 27, 2009.
On August 4, 2009, the after-hours enforcement team canvassed the Derita-Statesville Road area for code violations. Two parking on the lawn violations and one zoning violation was identified in the Poplar Springs area. Ten parking on the lawn violations were cited in the Allen Hills neighborhood and 11 parking on the lawn issues were identified along Dalecrest-Pinecrest Avenues.
On August 6, 7 and 10, Code Enforcement staff conducted a code sweep of the entire Derita-Statesville area. Over the three-day period, code staff identified 116 nuisance violations, such as high weeds and grass, junk vehicles and curbside violations. Staff also reported ten other zoning related issues, such as commercial vehicle violations and illegal business operations.
2010 Census Complete Count Committee

Kim McMillan, Corporate Communications, 704-336-2643, kmcmillan@ci.charlotte.nc.us
In preparation for the upcoming 2010 census the City of Charlotte, in conjunction with Mecklenburg County, has organized a Complete Count Committee comprised of representatives from the business, non-profit, faith, education, cultural/sports/entertainment, media and under-represented audiences. The purpose of the committee is to develop a community-wide participation plan to educate residents about the importance of the census and to increase the area's participation response rate from 64% during the 2000 census. The Charlotte Chamber has also joined the Complete Count Committee to help educate the business community and provide information on how census data impacts Charlotte.
Census data affects how over $300 billion in federal funds are distributed to local governments each year. An undercount of a specific population group could greatly affect funds available to assist their needs. Both the public and private sector use the data to determine where jobs and job programs are needed. The Census also contributes to data available on property values, median income, and other demographic information. The data also helps determine funding for public transportation, road rehabilitation and construction.
The public also benefits from surveys that are produced by Census data. Examples include the National Crime Victimization Survey, National Health Interview Survey, Bureau of Justice Statistics, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Housing and Urban Development and National Center for Health Statistics
The Complete Count Committee is co-chaired by Sue Breckenridge, consultant and civic leader, and Melanie Sizemore, principal of Carolina Real Data. The Complete Count Committee kicks-off its planning efforts Thursday, August 20 at 4 p.m. at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, room 260. The actual Census count will take place April 1, 2010.
