Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities will begin a multi-day project on Park Road at the intersection of Marsh Road next week to replace a failing 150-foot section of eight-inch sewer pipe. Lane closures in the vicinity will begin Wednesday (8/12) and last through Monday (8/17), with all lanes along the 3200 block of Park Road requiring closure during most of the day Sunday (8/16). Residential and church access will be maintained throughout all phases of this necessary repair.

Detour signs will be posted in advance, public safety agencies and CharMeck 311 have been advised, and public notification has begun to residents and commuters in the area. Letters were mailed yesterday to about 1,800 addresses near the worksite and will begin arriving in mailboxes this Thursday (8/6). A media traffic bulletin will also be distributed Thursday. At the same time, roadside message boards will go up in the vicinity and targeted door-to-door communication will commence as needed to supplement the mailing and media notification.

Utilities is coordinating traffic control and road resurfacing with the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT). Utilities and its contractor expect to finish the sewer pipe repair by Sunday evening before reopening at least one lane of traffic in each direction along Park Road. CDOT will move in after Monday morning rush hour to complete pavement repairs before all lanes of Park and Marsh Roads can be completely reopened.

Northbound and southbound motorists along Park Road are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes from August 12-17. Suggested detours are South Boulevard to the west and Selwyn/Queens Road to the east. Visit www.cmutilities.com for a detailed lane closure schedule.

Yesterday the City of Charlotte was notified by the Department of Energy (DOE) that it has been awarded $250,000, the first installment of Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funds. As described in the July 31 Council-Manager Memo, staff is negotiating the contract with Camp, Dresser & McKee to begin work on the City's energy efficiency strategy. Federal requirements call for the strategy to be adopted and submitted to DOE within 120 days of the initial grant award. Staff will provide additional information about the process moving forward next week
