Housing Charlotte Implementation Committee to Host second Mini-Forum - May 21
Resource:
Stanley Watkins, 704-336-3796, swatkins@ci.charlotte.nc.us
The Housing Charlotte Implementation Committee will host its second mini-forum on Wednesday, May 21 from 6 pm – 7:30 pm in Room CH-14 of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. Special letters of invitation to the Mayor and Council are included in your packets today.
For the past five months, the 60-member Implementation Committee has been identifying key issues surrounding the following solution areas: acquisition strategy, dedicated funding source; education, outreach and advocacy; incentive-based inclusionary housing policies; and rental housing subsidy. The forum will provide an opportunity for the committee to present preliminary recommendations around these solution areas. The forum will also allow discussion from the public. At least one additional mini-forum will be held before the committee presents its findings and recommendations to City Council later this year.
The Housing Charlotte Implementation Committee was created as a result of Housing Charlotte 2007 Affordable Housing Forum. The one-day event was held on February 22, 2007. Over 400 community leaders gathered to discuss affordable housing issues and recommended further study of the five solution areas mentioned above. Additional information about Housing Charlotte 2007 can be found at www.HousingCharlotte2007.org.

Queen City Smokes (5315 Greenbrook Drive)
Resource:
Laura Brewer, 704-336-3660, lbrewer@ci.charlotte.nc.us
On April 8, 2008 a notice of violation was sent to the owner of Queen City Smokes notifying them of the requirement to obtain a Change of Use permit in order to operate a business with a residence at this location, which had previously been used as an office (both uses are allowed in the B-2 Zoning District, but to change from one use to the other requires a change of use permit and various site improvements). The deadline for submitting plans for review was May 8, 2008.
The owner failed to submit plans and staff issued the first citation for $50.00 on May 12, 2008. Citations of increasing value will be issued on a set schedule over the next few weeks if plans are not received. Failure to bring the site into compliance may result in an environmental court decision.
Additionally, Mecklenburg County Building Code Enforcement has delivered a letter of violation giving the owner 30 days to bring the structure into compliance. The deadline for making the improvements is June 8, 2008.
