Communication Resources for Council and Citizens
Resource:
     Kim McMillan, 704-336-2643,
kmcmillan@ci.charlotte.nc.us

Attached are several new communication resources available to Council to use when addressing citizens and making presentations to local, national and international groups. The "Charlotte at a Glance" brochure has been developed to promote Charlotte's pro-business climate, awards and recognitions and interesting stats in terms of how the City of Charlotte serves its residents. The brochure is available electronically. Additionally, a companion PowerPoint presentation featuring the information in the brochure is available. A new citizen engagement flyer has also been created to better connect citizens with City of Charlotte information resources, such as CMail, an online news subscription service.

The About Our City brochure has also been updated with new Council members and biographical revisions.

Cankerworm Aerial Spray Results
Resource:
     Don McSween, City Arborist; 704-336-3459;
dmcsween@ci.charlotte.nc.us

Surveys of neighborhoods in the spraying area are very encouraging, showing public and private trees thick with dark, green leaves. This time last year, many trees were barren from caterpillar feeding, and if not barren, had thin, stressed, light green foliage. Without the spray, the combination of age, drought, and cankerworm defoliation would have killed many trees this spring.

Staff is continuing to evaluate the effects of the cankerworm on Charlotte's tree canopy and will report back to Council with developments. The next phase of the cankerworm program will be an aggressive tree banding campaign in the fall.

Cleanup of Homeless Camps
Resource:
     Walter Abernethy, 704-336-4213,
wabernethy@ci.charlotte.nc.us

Several weeks ago, Charlotte Code Enforcement received a citizen request regarding accumulation of debris associated with homeless camps between 1139 N. College Street and 127 Liddell Street. Upon investigation, inspectors found make-shift structures; some were padlocked by the persons who erected them. The make-shift structures and the overall property conditions violated Health & Sanitation regulations and contributed to other community safety issues in this area. Code Enforcement contacted the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, City Solid Waste Services and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police to request assistance in tearing the structures down and cleaning the area.

Inmates began cleaning the area on Wednesday, May 7. It will likely take more than a week before a substantial portion of the work is completed. Solid Waste Services is coordinating debris disposal with the Sheriff Deputies at the site.

Engineering & Property Management and Economic Development Host Successful Landscape Outreach Session

Alban Burney, 704-336-4178, aburney@ci.charlotte.nc.us On May 7, 2008, Engineering & Property Management's Business Services Division along with the City's Economic Development Small Business Opportunity Office held the second Annual Landscape Contractor's Breakfast and Outreach Session. The goal of this informational session was to educate Landscape Contractors on how to become certified to do work with the City and increase the pool of applicants bidding on E&PM's landscape work.

The breakfast proved to be a success with more than 50 landscape contractors in attendance, nearly double the number from last year. A formal presentation was conducted by E&PM's Business Services Division with participation from Landscape Management, Economic Development's Small Business Opportunity Program and the North Carolina Landscape Contractor's Registration Board.

Engineering & Property Management and Economic Development plan to host outreach events like this in the future and look forward to receiving bids from these companies in the fall.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Receives 2007 MetLife Foundation Community-Police Partnership Award for the Druid Hills Revitalization Project
Resource:
     Chief Darrel Stephens, 704-336-2360,

The MetLife Foundation and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) believe that public safety is an integral component of building strong and healthy communities. Because policing and community development yield greater benefits when they are strategically integrated, the MetLife Foundation and LISC partner to recognize, sustain and share the work of innovative partnerships between community groups and police to promote neighborhood safety and revitalization.

More than 400 community organizations and police departments across the country applied for the 2007 MetLife Foundation Community-Police Partnership Award. The CMPD was among the six awardees in the Neighborhood Revitalization category to receive this award and grants ranging from $10,000 to $25,000 to sustain community safety activities. Attached is the case study about the CMPD and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership joining forces to holistically combat Druid Hills' growing problems.
