Charlotte Trolley service resumes operations on Sunday, April 20. Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) invites you to attend the reopening ceremony at 1:00 p.m. at Atherton Mill, located at 2104 South Boulevard. Upon completion of opening remarks, dignitaries will board Historic Car 85 for a commemorative round trip from Atherton Mill to Center City. The public will be able to ride the vintage trolleys for free, non-stop from Atherton Mill to Ninth Street on Sunday until 5:00 p.m. A shuttle bus will be provided to connect LYNX Blue Line customers to Atherton Mill for those choosing to participate in the trolley event.
Initially trolley service will run on weekends only, with the first weekend of service beginning April 26 and 27. Hours of service on Saturdays will be from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sundays the trolley will run from 10:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Customers can purchase passes from the
ticket vending machines (TVMs), use a bus transfer or pay exact fare aboard the trolley. Weekly and monthly passes may also be used. Weekday trolley service is anticipated to start in May with service between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
The City of Charlotte's Economic Development Office, along with Councilmembers Carter and Kinsey are hosting a community meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at the Charlotte History Museum (3500 Shamrock Drive).
The purpose of the meeting is to share the latest developments regarding Eastland Mall and to answer questions from the community. We also will be announcing the creation of a website devoted to Eastland Mall redevelopment (
http://eastlandredevelopment.charmeck.org), where the community can access studies and presentations as well as stay updated on the latest news. The site will "go-live" on the morning of April 23, 2008.
The Charlotte Business Journal presented Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities with two awards during its April 16 Green Awards ceremony held at the Convention Center.
The Green Nonprofit Business Award recognizes Utilities for its commitment to the environment and sustainable business practices. Specific initiatives include our water reuse and biosolids recycling programs, rain gardens at McDowell Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, ISO 14001 certification at the Mallard Creek Water Reclamation Facility and environmental education programs.
The Green Commercial New Construction Project Award recognizes the new Environmental Services Facility off Billy Graham Parkway that includes numerous environmentally sound features. Utilities is seeking LEED certification for the building, which would make it the first City government building to be certified. The building saves water and energy and incorporates daylighting, recycled and local materials and products that improve indoor air quality.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities will celebrate Drinking Water Week with Reid Park Elementary this year. Water Week is a national industry celebration and education event that showcases the value of clean drinking water in our community.
Council members are invited to attend a celebration ceremony Friday, May 9, at 11:30 a.m. at Reid Park Elementary (4108 W. Tyvola Road.) We will read a Water Week proclamation and recognize winners of our poster contest, as well as the winners of our Water Star water conservation awards. That morning, Utilities and Storm Water Services will provide a variety of water education stations for students-teaching them about drinking water, wastewater, grease
disposal and pollution prevention.
Utilities will also send conservation tips and other features to media outlets and city employees throughout the week. We hope you can join us on May 9 at Reid Park.
